Whoa, no sophomore slump here! Zine Week 2013 was amazing, and we had so much fun.  Thanks to everyone who put together an event–Skylight Books, The Last Bookstore, The Smell, Etsy Mob/Crunchy Crafters, The Armory Center for the Arts, Pop-Hop, Scoops, Dream Panther, Space 15 Twenty, Bruised Zine, and Freeways Collide, Pygmy Hippo Shoppe, Echo Park Film Center, and DUM DUM Zine–and to all the people who came out.

We at LA Zine Fest love putting together this week each year because we know that people are out there who want to know about DIY venues, about creative workshops, and about how to connect with people with common interests. It’s a big city out there, but with each Zine Week, it gets a little bit more friendly.  See you at Zine Fest!

Maybe they just like us because we’re going to be neighbors soon, but Scoops has let  LA Zine Fest convince them to do a custom flavor for L.A. Zine Week!

 It will only be available on Saturday, Feb. 9, and it’s called Papercuts and Toner.  Sorry, vampires: there is no blood in this flavor.  Really, it’s rich strawberry ice cream with a balsamic swirl.  A balsamic swirl?!  Trust them; they’re experts.

Our dear friends toward the west, Pygmy Hippo Shoppe, are throwing quite the party for Zine Week and Valentine’s Day.  Come get crafty and make a Valentine for your significant other, your mom, your dogs–whoever!  Says Emi of Pygmy Hippo Shoppe, “We’ll supply everything but people are welcome to bring supplies they want to use!”  Joining Emi for the party is L.A.-based illustrator Esther Kim, who’ll be doing live drawings and folding them into take-away cards that you can personalize in the store or at home! There is also some mysterious talk about a giant paper moon being built in-store for romantic (or totally silly)  photo ops.

In honor of L.A. Zine Fest and L.A. Zine Week, “Robey Clark and Adriana Yugovich are tag-teaming to make all your zine-making dreams come true. Give us two Hamiltons and three hours, and you’ll be going home with at least one original piece of self-published, underground print work as well as an 11″x17″ collaborative poster.

You’ll learn a lot in this crash course: we’ll cover the basic screen printing process as well as various folding and binding techniques and classic idea-generating strategies. Some of our creations will be contributed to the Zine Fest Library for future zinesters to enjoy forever and ever, amen.”

Etsy Mob/Crunchy Crafters and LA Zine Fest are joining forces to bring you this awesome workshop intended for neophytes and experienced zinesters alike. Hear a short presentation introducing you to self publishing and DIY culture, then create an 8-page zine with a single 11×17 piece of paper. The theme for the zines will be announced at the workshop.

BONUS: bring a blank, light-colored t-shirt and screenprint the L.A. Zine Fest logo onto it!

What a cornerstone of DIY in Los Angeles The Smell is.  It houses year-round maybe the only public zine library in Los Angeles proper, which just so happens to be stocked by the tender, paper-cut hands of L.A. Zine Fest organizer Rhea.  Check it out between experimental sets from David Scott Stone, Bachsung, Hex Horizontal, and Catheter. And if a small girl with curly hair is selling raw chocolate truffle, you should *definitely* buy one.
